The Oxbridge Mentoring Scheme OMS, which is independent of Oxford
and Cambridge universities, seeks to increase equality of
opportunity by offering potential Oxbridge applicants one-to-one
advice and mentoring.
In the course of the scheme, students gain broader subject knowledge
and improve their self-presentation. This holistic approach can be
invaluable in the growing competition for an Oxbridge place, as more
and more students achieve top A-level grades. |

Students on the Oxbridge Mentoring Scheme
are introduced to university preparation by our dedicated,
friendly advisors. Our Oxbridge-educated tutors then draw on
their knowledge and experience of success to help students
make the right choices. Each student is provided with an
individual learning plan designed to supplement their school
work. Tutors help students to analyse, as well as summarise,
the academic material chosen for them.
Encouraged to
practice their verbal and academic skills, students gain
self-confidence and develop skills which can be the key to
negotiating the rigorous Oxbridge admissions process. As a
result, the success rate of our students is well above the
national average. Even those unable to secure an Oxbridge place
tend to gain admission to other top universities. At each stage
of the OMS, student self-reliance is cultivated, originality
championed and individuality preserved.

Who is the OMS for? |
| OMS works with state schools to develop the
potential of sixth formers they have defined as gifted & talented on
a one-to-one basis. We understand about the disadvantages students
may have to overcome and the pressures teachers face. Schools which
had never before secured an Oxbridge place for one of their students
can now, as a result of working with us, take pride in Oxbridge
success. The OMS also helps students put forward by their own
families or by community-based organisations. |

Why we are unique
The OMS helps students from all backgrounds to grasp the point of
applying to Oxford or Cambridge. While a visit to an Oxbridge
college/faculty open day can provide some answers to their
questions, students’ “fear of the unknown” is most effectively
dispelled by learning more about Oxbridge life and education.
In academic terms, our network of Oxbridge-educated Tutors and
E-mentors enables us to provide one-to-one support throughout the
scheme. When it comes to making the application, the OMS students
benefit from our wide experience of (i) Oxbridge colleges (ii) the
application procedure and (iii) the interview process.
We further pride ourselves on being different from other services
focusing on Oxbridge admissions in that we encourage student
initiative within a longer time-frame of preparation. This approach
enables students to carry out their own focused research into course
and college choice. By using our knowledge of the two universities,
we also guide individuals towards those Oxbridge-run schemes which
will most benefit them.
At subsequent stages, OMS fosters self-reliance by encouraging
students to write and revise their UCAS application, guided by our
detailed advice and suggestions. They are also shown how to fully
prepare themselves for interviews conducted in a variety of formats.
The help we offer includes several mock interviews, followed by
written debriefs of their performance.
The OMS also has a broader aim. By building a relationship with
schools and individual students from the state sector and guiding
their research into student life at Oxbridge, we seek to increase
the appeal of the two universities to state school applicants. While
the Oxbridge intake of students from the independent and state
school sectors is near even, a disproportionately high percentage of
applicants continue to come from the independent sector. The OMS is
committed to improving this imbalance.
